Alexis S. Axelrad

Alexis S. Axelrad has been a partner at Barst & Mukamal since 2007, joining the firm in March 1998 as an Associate Attorney. She maintains a dynamic corporate and family-based immigration practice based out of New York City. Alexis received her B.A. from the University of Maryland at College Park (1994), earned her Juris Doctor (JD) from New York Law School (1997), and was admitted to the New York State bar in 1998.
Alexis has been active in the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) for over 25 years. AILA is the preeminent bar association for US immigration lawyers with 17,000 members worldwide. As of June 2023, Alexis serves as Second Vice-President of AILA’s Executive Committee responsible for advancing the goals and mission of the organization. Alexis previously served three terms as Elected Director of AILA National’s Board of Governors (BOG) and is a Past Chair of AILA National’s Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Committee, USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) Benefits Committee, Interagency Committee, Vermont Service Center and USCIS SCOPS (Service Center Operations) committees. Alexis is also a past Chair of the New York Chapter of AILA.

In addition to her focus on US immigration, Alexis is a longstanding member of the Executives Association of New York (EANYC) and serves on its Board and Membership Committee.

Alexis is a proud member and sponsor of the New York City Chapter of The Society of Human Resources Management (NYCSHRM). Alexis is annual speaker at its Law and Legislative Conference and past speaker at the Annual Conference amongst other NYSCHRM programs.

Alexis was the recipient of the distinguished 2020 AILA Susan Quarles Service Award, past recipient of AILA President’s Commendation Award for Outstanding Service (2008-2010 & 2014, 2019 & 2021) and was selected in Lawdragon 500 Leading US Corporate Employment Lawyers 13th Guide, 2021 & 2022 and the 2023 Lawdragon 100 Leading Immigration Lawyers.

New York Super Lawyers has listed her in the ‘rising stars’ section of top immigration attorneys in New York in 2011 and 2012, and as a Super Lawyer from 2013 to present and is recognized by Chambers & Partners USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business and in Best Lawyers in New York.

Alexis was the author of a quarterly column on immigration matters published in the New York Law Journal and the researcher and writer of US Immigration Laws: Working, Living and Studying in America (1999). She is a frequent writer for periodicals and speaker on immigration and nationality law and is honored to be a source of information and guidance for her colleagues in and outside of the immigration bar and for the NYCSHRM community.
